Skin boosters for the skin barrier: how to choose types and combinations by concern?

Skin boosters for a weakened skin barrier fall into two groups: those focused on recovery and hydration, and those focused on structure and elasticity. Depending on whether dryness or thinning is the more pressing concern, we choose one type or combine the two.
The skin barrier is a protective layer in the outermost stratum corneum that keeps moisture from escaping and filters out external irritants. Lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids fill the spaces between skin cells, while natural moisturizing factors inside the cells hold on to water. When this structure breaks down, the skin dries out easily and may turn red or sting at even minor irritation.
Because skin boosters deliver ingredients into the dermis, their role differs from that of moisturizers, which replenish the stratum corneum directly. Barrier care therefore goes hand in hand with moisturizing at home.
Skin Boosters for Recovery and Hydration
- Rejuran Healer: Delivers PN (polynucleotide), a building block of DNA, into the dermis to support an environment in which damaged skin can recover. Considered when the skin easily becomes rough and is slow to recover.
- REJURAN HB+: Combines PN and hyaluronic acid in a 1:1 ratio, with the addition of lidocaine, an anesthetic ingredient. Used when addressing recovery and hydration together, or when inner dryness and fine texture lines are both a concern.
- Rizne: An injection that delivers PN derived from salmonid fish into the skin layers. Also considered for skin with reduced elasticity and enlarged, sagging pores.
Skin Boosters for Structure and Elasticity
Skin whose barrier has been weak for a long time tends to experience thinning and loss of elasticity on top of dryness. In such cases, we also consider types that address the dermal structure.
- Re2O: Replenishes the dermis directly with extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from acellular human dermal matrix (hADM). This approach fills in the components themselves.
- Juveacell 3%: Belongs to the same acellular human dermal matrix category. The 3% formulation is used to refine skin texture and overall skin condition.
- Juvelook Skin: An injection combining PDLLA and hyaluronic acid. As it breaks down, it stimulates the formation of new tissue such as collagen.
- GOURI: Delivers particle-free liquid PCL (polycaprolactone) into the dermis. It spreads widely and encourages the skin to produce its own collagen.
Replenishing vs. Stimulating: The Difference
Even within the same structural category, the timing of visible changes and post-treatment reactions differ.
| Category | When changes begin to appear | Post-treatment reactions | Recommended interval and number of sessions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re2O | Texture and elasticity improve gradually over 1~2 weeks | Slight swelling or tightness subsides within 2~7 days | 2–3 or more sessions at 3–4 week intervals |
| Juveàcell 3% | About 2~3 weeks after injection | Bruising, swelling, redness and raised bumps usually settle within a few days | Multiple sessions at 3~4-week intervals |
| Juvelook Skin | Usually within 2~3 weeks | Bruising, swelling, embossing and redness gradually ease | At least 3 sessions at 4-week intervals |
| GOURI | Radiance within a few days; elasticity gradually from about 1 month | Redness and slight raised bumps mostly resolve within 48 hours | 3 sessions at 4-week intervals |
