Swelling after ONDA lifting: how many days does it last and how do you reduce it?

Swelling after ONDA lifting often appears as a slightly puffy face along with warmth right after treatment, and it usually subsides within a few hours to a day or two. If the jawline and double chin were treated with the handpiece that targets the fat layer, those areas may feel heavy and look swollen for a few more days.
Why does swelling occur after ONDA lifting?
ONDA is a device that uses 2.45GHz microwaves to deliver heat to the dermis and subcutaneous fat layer. The handpiece has a cooling system that lowers the temperature of the epidermis during treatment, but the tissue heated underneath develops a mild inflammatory response and increased blood flow, which appear as swelling and warmth.
Between the 3mm handpiece that targets the dermis and the 7mm handpiece that targets the fat layer, the fat-layer side keeps heat deeper, so swelling may last a little longer in areas with more fat, such as the double chin or under the cheeks.
Care to reduce swelling after ONDA lifting
- On the day of treatment and the following day, wash your face gently with lukewarm water and do not rub hard.
- For about a week, avoid things that add heat to the body, such as saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths, and strenuous exercise.
- Refrain from alcohol and smoking for about a week.
- Apply plenty of moisturizing cream and repair cream, and use sunscreen thoroughly when going outside.
- Raising your head slightly while sleeping may help reduce morning swelling.
At our Suwon clinic, ONDA can be performed without anesthesia, and we finish with moisturizing and soothing care and sunscreen, so you can return to daily life right after treatment.
What to check if swelling after ONDA lifting lasts a long time
If the swelling is decreasing day by day, you can keep watching it, but please contact the clinic if the swelling increases even after several days, if only one side swells severely, or if blisters or stinging marks like burns appear on the skin. If your face is on the slimmer side, we can also decide during consultation to reduce use of the fat-layer handpiece and focus the settings on skin firmness.
If you are pregnant, have metal implants in the treatment area, or use an electronic device such as a pacemaker, you must let us know before treatment.

FAQ
Q. Can I go to work the day after ONDA lifting?
A. With ONDA, you can return to daily life right after treatment, and swelling and redness usually subside within a few hours to a day. Areas where the fat layer was treated, such as the double chin, may feel heavy for a few days, so if you have an important event, schedule the treatment with some time to spare.
Q. Can I use a cold compress for swelling after ONDA lifting?
A. Gently cooling the area with a cold towel while warmth remains on the day of treatment may help. Applying ice directly to the skin for a long time can be irritating, so wrap it in a towel and apply it for just a few minutes at a time, without pressing hard on the treated area.
Q. Does the effect of ONDA lifting decrease as the swelling goes down?
A. The taut look right after treatment includes some swelling, so you may feel that it has decreased slightly as the swelling goes down. Collagen changes in the dermis and fat reduction in the fat layer progress over several weeks, so results are assessed after the swelling has fully subsided.
