Men's Beard Hair Removal: How Many Sessions Does It Take, and Why Does It Take So Long?

Men's Beard Hair Removal: How Many Sessions Does It Take, and Why Does It Take So Long?

Men's beard hair removal repeatedly delivers laser heat to thick, deep beard hair roots to gradually weaken their ability to regrow, so it isn't finished in one or two sessions but continues over multiple sessions a few weeks apart. The number of sessions needed depends on the thickness and density of the beard and the area, and dense areas such as the chin and philtrum tend to need more sessions than the cheeks or neck.

Why does men's beard hair removal take multiple sessions?

The laser is absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair and converted into heat, and this heat travels to the hair follicle and reduces the activity of the cells that produce hair. Heat is delivered well only during the growth phase, when the hair is attached to the root and growing, and since only some of the beard is in the growth phase at any one time, hairs that were in the resting phase come up in turn by the next session.

Men's beard hair is thicker than hair elsewhere on the body, with deeper follicles and higher density. Because the area remains under the continuous influence of male hormones, fine hairs may remain even after repeated sessions, and some may grow back years later, requiring additional maintenance sessions. For this reason, the goal is set on reducing density and thickness to ease the burden of shaving, rather than on leaving no hair at all.

Beard Hair Removal Differences by Area and Gray Beard Hair

The philtrum and chin have the thickest, densest hair, so the stinging during treatment tends to be stronger and more sessions are needed. The cheeks and sideburns have relatively finer hair, so changes may appear sooner, and under the jaw and on the neck we check for folliculitis or pigmentation caused by shaving irritation. Gray beard hair has almost no melanin for the laser to react to, so its response to laser hair removal is limited.

At our Suwon clinic, men's facial hair removal is offered in two options: a full-face option that covers the philtrum, chin, jawline, double chin, cheeks, and sideburns, and an option that covers only the philtrum and chin.

Care Before and After Men's Beard Hair Removal

Before treatment, don't pluck your beard with waxing or tweezers; trim it only by shaving. Plucking removes the hair root the laser needs to target. On the day of treatment, avoid rubbing your face hard or washing with hot water for a long time, apply plenty of moisturizer, and apply sunscreen carefully when you go out. Between 1 and 3 weeks after treatment, the heated hairs fall out as if being pushed out; don't pull them out forcibly, but let them clear naturally through face washing and shaving.

Right after treatment, the area around the follicles may become red and swollen or feel hot, and this usually subsides within a few hours to a few days. If redness, swelling, or pain persists or worsens, please contact the clinic. If you have recently tanned or are taking medication that makes you sensitive to light, please let us know before treatment.

FAQ

Q. How many sessions of men's beard hair removal do I need?

A. It depends on the thickness and density of the beard, but it tends to require more sessions than other areas of the body. You receive several sessions a few weeks apart while checking for changes such as hair becoming finer and growing back more slowly, and any hair that grows back after that is managed with maintenance sessions.

Q. Is beard laser hair removal very painful?

A. In areas with thick hair, such as the philtrum and chin, there tends to be a strong stinging sensation like being snapped with a rubber band, and it is felt less as sessions go on and the hair becomes finer. Treatment is performed while a cooling device cools the skin surface, and if you are sensitive to pain, the anesthesia method is decided during consultation.

Q. Can gray beard hair also be removed with a laser?

A. Gray beard hair has almost no melanin pigment to absorb the laser, so its response to laser hair removal is limited. If gray hairs are mixed in with dark beard hair, the dark hair is reduced first, and how to manage the remaining gray hairs is decided together during consultation after an examination.
