How Are Facial Swelling and Skin Elasticity Related? Managing Swelling After Lifting

Facial puffiness that appears in the morning and fades is a state in which a little extra fluid temporarily collects between tissues, so frequent puffiness does not necessarily mean the skin will sag faster.
Skin elasticity is the support provided by collagen and elastic fibers in the dermis, while swelling is fluid added on top of that. However, on puffy days, areas that have lost elasticity can look more noticeable. Swelling after lifting is a temporary response of tissue that has received heat, so we look at it separately.
Causes of Facial Swelling
The body maintains balance by taking in and draining fluid between tissues through blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. When this flow is temporarily disrupted, the face can look puffy.
- Salty food and late-night snacks: Salty food and late-night snacks cause the body to retain fluid.
- Sleep: Lack of sleep or irregular sleep hours can make morning puffiness worse.
- Alcohol: Alcohol from the night before can lead to facial puffiness the next morning.
- Hormonal changes: Swelling can also occur during times of hormonal change, such as the menstrual cycle.
- Reactions after treatment: It appears temporarily in the treated area after laser or lifting treatment.
If swelling persists without a clear reason or gradually worsens, a medical consultation is needed to check for other causes such as allergies, inflammation, or kidney disease. If only one side swells suddenly, if pain and warmth accompany it, or if your lips, tongue, or throat swell and you have difficulty breathing, please seek emergency care immediately.
Swelling vs. Sagging
| Category | Swelling from lifestyle habits | Swelling after lifting | Sagging from loss of elasticity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main cause | Salty food, lack of sleep, alcohol | Temporary reaction of tissue that received heat | Loss of collagen and elastic fibers, loosening of support structures |
| When it appears | In the morning, after the previous day's habits | Right after treatment to a few days | Gradually over several years |
| Changes within a day | Decreases over time | Subsides over a few days | Little change |
| What to do first | Review lifestyle habits | Follow the aftercare instructions you received | Examination and lifting consultation |
The skin around the eyes is thin, so changes in fluid show easily, and swelling under the chin can blur the jawline. These changes often subside as the swelling goes down, so sagging is judged by how the face looks on days without swelling.
How to Assess Swelling After Lifting
Ultrasound lifting such as Ulthera and radiofrequency lifting such as Thermage FLX deliver heat into the skin, so mild swelling, redness, and throbbing may occur for a few days. This swelling is also part of why the face may look tighter than usual right after treatment.
Changes from lifting appear gradually, over 1–2 months for Ulthera and 2–4 months for Thermage FLX. For that reason, progress is more accurately assessed after the swelling settles, and there is no need to rub your face hard to reduce swelling faster.

Precautions on the day of treatment
- After Ulthera, you can wash your face and wear makeup right away; use a gentle cleanser.
- Even if your skin feels warm, do not apply ice directly to the skin or use hot compresses. For cold compresses, follow the instructions for the treatment you received.
- Do not rub or press hard on the treated area.
What to Avoid for One Week
- Wash your face with lukewarm water for the first 3 days.
- Postpone saunas, alcohol, peeling treatments, and scrub products for about 1 week.
- Pause care that presses hard, such as facial massage or massage devices.

Swelling Care by Area
Around the eyes
Because the skin here is thin, swelling shows here first. Gently place a cool towel over the area and avoid rubbing your eyes hard. If only one eye is severely swollen, or if there is pain, redness, or a change in vision, please see a doctor.
Forehead
Swelling can also result from sleeping face down or as a reaction to treatment. Raise your head slightly when sleeping, and avoid repeatedly pressing or massaging your forehead.
Cheeks and under the chin
When swollen, the face can look wider and heavier. Cut back on salty food and late-night drinking, and keep your body moving with light walks. If swelling under the chin recurs often, check whether there is another cause, such as a salivary gland or dental problem.
In rare cases after Ulthera, marks resembling white lines may appear on the skin; please let us know if this happens. If swelling and redness worsen day by day, if warmth and pain increase, or if blisters form or sensation becomes dull, please contact us right away. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have inflammation or a wound in the treatment area, or are taking medication or have allergies, please let us know before treatment.
Q. Can I get lifting because of swelling?
A. Lifting is a treatment that addresses sagging and loss of elasticity; it is not a way to treat swelling. If facial swelling persists, the cause, such as allergies or inflammation, should be checked first, and lifting is discussed when sagging is also present.
