Sculptra Results: When Does the Volume Build Up, and How Long Does It Last?

Sculptra results appear not right after injection but as collagen is gradually produced over 4 to 6 weeks, and after several sessions at 1-month intervals, volume settles in over several months. The fullness seen right after treatment is due to the water in the injection and goes down within a few days, so results are not judged by that appearance.

How do Sculptra results come about?

PLLA, the main ingredient of Sculptra, consists of microparticles that break down slowly in the body. When the particles spread through the deep layers of the skin, the surrounding tissue envelops them and produces new collagen, and that collagen supports hollow temples and cheeks and sagging contours from within. Rather than filling volume with the substance itself, as filler does, it works by building up tissue that the body produces in response, so it requires sessions and time.

Why Sculptra Results Feel Different from Person to Person

The rate of collagen production varies with age, skin thickness, and lifestyle habits such as smoking and sleep. People with deep hollowness may feel less change even with the same number of sessions, and how evenly it spreads also depends on whether massage was done consistently after treatment. How long results last also varies greatly between individuals, so the timing of the next treatment is decided by monitoring progress after the sessions are completed.

At our Suwon clinic, Sculptra is offered in 1-vial units, and we advise gently massaging for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for at least 5 days after treatment.

You can wash your face and wear makeup starting 2 to 3 hours later, and remove the DuoDERM dressing after 3 days. For 3 to 7 days, avoid heavy drinking, smoking, saunas, hot baths, and strenuous exercise, and for 2 to 3 weeks, reduce pressure on the treated area, such as sleeping face down or meridian massage. Bruising, swelling, and a foreign-body sensation mostly subside within 1 to 2 weeks, but if the treated area turns pale white or dark red with severe pain, please contact the clinic right away. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please let us know before treatment.

FAQ

Q. How many Sculptra sessions do I need?

A. It depends on the depth and extent of the hollowness, but at least 3 sessions at 1-month intervals is used as the baseline. Rather than injecting a large amount at once, sessions are divided so that collagen builds up evenly, and whether to add more is decided after monitoring for a few months following the last session.

Q. What happens if I don't do the Sculptra massage?

A. Massage helps the injected particles spread evenly instead of clumping in one spot. Skipping it may increase the chance of nodules, small lumps that can be felt, so follow the number of times and duration you were advised, and see a doctor if you feel a lump.

Q. What's the difference between Sculptra and Juvelook Volume?

A. Both injections work by stimulating collagen production, but their ingredients differ: Sculptra is PLLA, while Juvelook Volume is PDLLA with hyaluronic acid. Their particle shapes and spreading properties also differ, so the choice is made after an examination according to the area and degree of hollowness.
