Contouring injections for men: what do we assess differently from women?

Contouring injections for men: what do we assess differently from women?

Contouring injections for men work on the same principle of reducing facial fat as for women, but men often have thicker skin, a larger facial area, and well-developed jaw muscles, so the order of assessment during examination is different. Only after determining whether a round face is caused by fat, muscle, or sagging can we judge whether contouring injections are the right fit.

What do we distinguish before contouring injections for men?

If the area below the cheeks and under the chin feels thick when pinched, fat is likely the cause. If the side of the jaw bulges firmly when you clench your back teeth, the masseter, or chewing muscle, is the cause, so jaw Botox, which acts on the muscle, is considered first instead of contouring injections. If the cheeks have sagged downward and blurred the jawline, lifting may be the better fit.

On men's faces, it is common for all three of these to be present together. In that case, we plan contouring injections for areas with more fat and Botox for areas with larger muscles, separately.

How are contouring injections for men performed?

Contouring injections are treatments in which a product that helps reduce fat is injected in divided doses into areas with fat, promoting fat breakdown over 2 to 3 weeks after treatment. At our Suwon clinic, we use steroid-free Face Fit (GPC) injections, with 3 or more sessions at 1 to 2 week intervals as the baseline. The treatment takes about 10 minutes or less, and you can wash your face and wear makeup right away.

Men tend to have a larger facial area and a thicker fat layer, so changes may appear later even with the same number of sessions. Taking photos from the same angle between sessions and comparing them makes it easier to judge the change.

Care and precautions after contouring injections for men

So that the ingredients spread evenly, gently massage the treated area for about 3 minutes, 3 times a day, for at least 3 days after treatment. For 3 to 7 days, avoid heavy drinking, smoking, saunas and jjimjilbang, and strenuous exercise. Combining diet control and exercise and drinking plenty of water may help.

Bruising, swelling, pain, and a foreign-body sensation mostly ease within 1 to 2 weeks. Rarely, swelling may occur due to an allergic reaction, so if itching and warmth persist or the swelling gradually increases, please contact the clinic. If you have high blood pressure or are taking any medications, please let us know before treatment.

FAQ

Q. How many contouring injection sessions do men need?

A. The baseline is 3 or more sessions at 1 to 2 week intervals. Because men have a thicker fat layer and larger area, changes may appear later, so 2 to 3 weeks after the third session we compare photos taken from the same angle and decide whether to add more sessions.

Q. My jaw is angular. Can contouring injections for men make it slimmer?

A. If an angular jaw is caused by the chewing muscle, we consider jaw Botox, which acts on muscle volume. Contouring injections reduce fat and do not act on muscle or bone, so we decide by looking at both how much the jaw bulges when you clench your back teeth and how much fat can be pinched.

Q. Can I exercise right after contouring injections for men?

A. For 3 to 7 days after treatment, avoid strenuous exercise that makes you sweat heavily and saunas. Light walking is fine, and once the swelling has subsided, combining diet control and exercise may help maintain the change.
