Lip filler swelling in Suwon: how many days do swelling and bruising last, and when does the shape settle?

Lip filler swelling in Suwon: how many days do swelling and bruising last, and when does the shape settle?

If you are about to get lip filler and are worried about how long the swelling and bruising will last or whether they will settle before an important event, it is worth first understanding how swelling subsides. Lip filler is a treatment in which hyaluronic acid in gel form is injected beneath the lip mucosa, and lip filler swelling is a healing reaction caused by needle stimulation and the water the filler absorbs.

Lip filler swelling usually looks largest in the first 2–3 days, and the main swelling goes down at around one week; bruising, swelling, and a foreign-body sensation mostly settle within 1–2 weeks. The time to judge the shape is at around 2 weeks, once even the residual swelling has gone down. At our Suwon clinic, we first look at the thickness ratio of your lips and any difference between the left and right sides during the consultation, then decide on the product and amount to match the shape you want and your schedule.

In this article, we go over why lip filler causes swelling and bruising, how things look day by day, the treatment process, care to reduce swelling, and side effects and warning signs, in that order.

Lip filler swelling: key points

  • Lip filler swelling occurs from a combination of the healing reaction along the needle path and the water the filler absorbs.
  • Swelling and bruising are greatest in the first few days and mostly settle within 1–2 weeks.
  • Lip shape is judged at around 2 weeks once residual swelling has gone down, and any difference between the left and right sides before then includes swelling.
  • For 2–3 weeks after treatment, keep the lips from being pressed or irritated, and avoid alcohol and saunas for 3–7 days.

Why does lip filler cause swelling and bruising?

When the body triggers a healing reaction where the needle has passed, fluid builds up in the tissue, and the injected hyaluronic acid also draws in surrounding moisture. That is why the lips look fuller than the amount injected for the first few days, and the actual shape emerges as the swelling goes down.

The lips are an area where the skin is thin and small blood vessels run densely. When the needle touches a small blood vessel, the leaked blood collects under the mucosa and becomes a bruise, and as the blood is absorbed, it changes from reddish purple to blue and yellow as it fades.

The extent of swelling and bruising depends on the thickness of your lip skin, the amount injected, the injection site, and whether you tend to bruise easily. If you are taking anti-inflammatory painkillers such as aspirin, or blood-thinning medications or supplements such as omega-3 or vitamin E, you may bruise more easily, so please let us know during the consultation.

How does lip filler swelling change day by day?

How quickly swelling goes down varies from person to person, but it generally follows the pattern below.

PeriodSwellingBruisingShape
Day of treatmentSwelling starts to appear, with a dull ache or warmthIf it occurs, appears reddish purpleLooks bigger than the amount injected
Days 2–3Looks largestLooks darkestLeft and right sides may look quite different
Around one weekMain swelling goes downFades to yellowLip contours become visible
Around 2 weeksEven residual swelling goes downMostly goneTime to judge the shape

Early on, you may feel something like small grains inside the lips or a firm sensation. If these shrink along with the swelling, it is part of the healing process, but if they get bigger or firmer over time, you should have an examination. If you have an event where your lips will be on display, such as a photo shoot or wedding, it is best to schedule with about 2 weeks to spare, considering the time it takes for swelling to settle.

How is lip filler performed?

How lip filler works

Hyaluronic acid filler binds with water to maintain volume and is gradually broken down and absorbed by the body. The lips are an area where the thickness ratio of the upper and lower lips, the lip border, and the height of the mouth corners are all visible together, so rather than injecting a large amount at once, the filler is divided by layer and position. If you are not happy with the shape, it can be dissolved and adjusted with hyaluronidase, a dissolving enzyme.

If the corners of the mouth look droopy, rather than just filling lip volume, we sometimes also consider filler at the corners of the mouth or botox for the muscles that pull the mouth corners down. Which combination is right is decided after also looking at how your mouth moves when you smile or talk.

Treatment steps at our Suwon clinic

  1. Personalized Consultation
  2. Photos (Before Treatment)
  3. Numbing Cream / Local Anesthesia
  4. Design
  5. Disinfection
  6. Treatment
  7. Photos (After Treatment)

Numbing cream is the standard anesthesia, with local anesthesia added if needed. The procedure takes about 10 minutes, and you can return to daily activities right afterward. It lasts 6–12 months, varying by area, product, and individual. The product is chosen from imported and Korean-made fillers to match your lip thickness and desired shape, and there is also a package that combines lip volume filler with mouth corner filler and mouth corner botox. When treating again, the decision is made through a consultation after bruising and swelling have settled.

Care to reduce lip filler swelling and bruising

  • You can wash your face and wear makeup 2–3 hours after treatment, and the DuoDERM patch applied to the treated area is removed after 1–3 days.
  • For 3–7 days after treatment, avoid heavy drinking, smoking, saunas and jjimjilbang, hot baths, and strenuous exercise to prevent inflammation.
  • Take the prescribed medication consistently for 3 days to prevent inflammation and relieve pain.
  • For 2–3 weeks, keep the treated area from being pressed or irritated, and reschedule sleeping face down or on your side, facial meridian massage, ultrasound and radiofrequency treatments, and dental treatment.
  • In the early stage after treatment, rest a towel-wrapped cold pack lightly on the area without pressing to reduce the spread of swelling.

When sleeping, raising your pillow slightly and lying on your back may help keep swelling from shifting to one side. Hold off on sucking hard through a straw, exfoliating your lips, and heavy lip products until the swelling settles, and apply lip moisturizer often. Since filler is gradually absorbed by the body, getting another consultation when the volume starts to decrease makes it easier to maintain the shape.

Lip filler side effects and precautions

Common reactions are swelling, bruising, pain, and a foreign-body sensation, and most settle within 1–2 weeks. The degree of reaction and how quickly the shape settles vary from person to person.

In rare cases, asymmetry, lumps, nerve damage, allergic reactions, or inflammation can occur. The reaction that requires the most caution is when filler blocks a blood vessel; although very rare, if blood cannot reach the tissue beyond the blocked vessel, skin necrosis can occur, and if a blood vessel leading to the eye is blocked, there is a risk of vision loss. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, so if such signs appear, they must be treated quickly. If you have a medical history such as an antibiotic allergy or any special conditions, be sure to tell us before treatment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are prone to cold sores around the mouth, or are allergic to hyaluronic acid or anesthetics, please let us know before treatment.

If pain keeps getting worse even after taking the prescribed medication, your lips turn pale white or the skin color changes, blisters form or itching and warmth persist, or your vision becomes blurry, do not wait; contact the clinic.

What should be checked before lip filler?

If any of these apply, start with a lip shape consultation

  • My lips look thin, or there is a big difference in thickness between my upper and lower lips.
  • The left and right sides of my lips move differently when I smile or talk.
  • My mouth corners droop, and people tell me I look tired when my face is at rest.
  • I have an event within 2 weeks where my lips will be on display, such as a photo shoot or wedding.

If two or more apply, it is a good idea to check your lip proportions, movement, and schedule before deciding on the amount of filler. Whether to treat, which method to use, and the treatment area are decided together during the consultation after the doctor's examination.

In short, lip filler swelling is greatest in the first few days and the shape is judged at around 2 weeks, so the key is to leave room in your schedule and avoid pressing on your lips during recovery.

FAQ

Q. How many days does lip filler swelling last?

A. It looks largest in the first 2–3 days, the main swelling goes down at around one week, and residual swelling may remain until around 2 weeks. How quickly the swelling goes down depends on the amount injected, the location, and the individual, so the shape is reassessed after 2 weeks.

Q. When does lip filler bruising go away?

A. If bruising occurs, it is darkest in the first few days, changes to blue and yellow, and mostly fades within 1–2 weeks. If it does not fade after 2 weeks or keeps spreading, we recommend getting an examination to make sure it is not a blood vessel problem.

Q. Is there a way to make lip filler swelling go down faster?

A. In the early stage after treatment, rest a towel-wrapped cold pack lightly on your lips without pressing, and sleep on your back with your pillow raised slightly. Avoiding heavy drinking, smoking, saunas, and strenuous exercise for 3–7 days after treatment helps keep the swelling from increasing again.

Q. Do I have to take medication after lip filler?

A. We advise taking the medication prescribed according to the treatment area consistently for 3 days to prevent inflammation and relieve pain. Some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory painkillers can increase bruising, so if you want to take any other medication, please ask us first.

Q. What if I'm not happy with the shape of my lip filler?

A. While swelling remains, it is hard to judge the actual shape, so we look again at around 2 weeks. If there is too much or the position isn't right, it can be dissolved and adjusted with hyaluronidase, and the timing for reinjection is decided during a consultation after bruising and swelling have settled.

Q. How can I find out the cost of lip filler?

A. The cost depends on the type and amount of filler used and whether mouth corner filler or botox is also done. We check the condition of your lips and the shape you want during the consultation before giving you the details, and you can also check the treatment items on our treatment information page.
