Laser hair removal intervals: how many weeks apart and how many sessions?

Laser hair removal intervals: how many weeks apart and how many sessions?

Laser hair removal intervals are set according to the hair growth cycle. Areas where hair grows quickly, like the face, have shorter intervals, while areas with longer cycles, like the legs or back, have longer intervals, and because hair has to go through several rounds of becoming finer and sparser, it does not finish in just one or two sessions.

Why laser hair removal is timed to the growth cycle

Hair repeats a cycle of growth (anagen), regression (catagen), and rest (telogen). Laser light is absorbed by the melanin in hair and converted to heat, and it works best on hair in the growth phase, when the follicle has plenty of melanin and the hair is still attached to its root. Only a portion of hair is in the growth phase at any given time, so the next session needs to be timed to when resting hairs start growing again, so that heat reaches the remaining hairs in turn. Treated hairs being pushed out and shedding over the weeks after treatment is also part of this process.

How does the number of laser hair removal sessions vary by area and hair type?

The face, where hair is fine and the growth cycle is short, gets shorter intervals, while areas with longer cycles, such as the underarms, legs, and back, get longer intervals. Thick, dense hair such as a man's beard, or areas affected by hormones, may need more sessions, and white or very light hair has little melanin, so the laser does not respond well to it.

For facial hair removal, you can generally expect hair density and thickness to decrease over about 6–10 sessions, after which additional sessions once or twice a year may be used to maintain results. As sessions progress and the remaining hair gets finer, the wavelength and energy settings are adjusted as well. At our Suwon clinic, facial hair removal is generally done about every 4 weeks, and body hair removal every 6–8 weeks depending on the area.

FAQ

Q. Will laser hair removal finish sooner if I shorten the interval to 2 weeks?

A. Shortening the interval does not bring the finish date forward. Hair that reappears within 2 weeks is often hair already heated in the previous session being pushed out, so waiting until resting hairs move into the growth phase is the way to make the most of each session.

Q. Once I complete all my laser hair removal sessions, will the hair never grow back?

A. After completing your sessions, you can expect hair to become finer and less dense, but some hair may grow back over time. New hair can also appear due to hormonal changes or age, so maintenance sessions once or twice a year are sometimes used.

Q. Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?

A. Between sessions, remove hair by shaving only. Pulling hair out by the root with waxing or tweezers leaves no root for the laser to target in the next session, so it is best to avoid plucking methods and strong sun exposure starting 4–6 weeks before treatment.
