Jaw Botox swelling: how long does it last, and how can you tell it apart from muscle changes?

Jaw Botox swelling is a small puffiness and mild swelling at the injection sites that usually subsides within a few hours to a few days. Square-jaw Botox involves few injection points and places the product inside the muscle, so the swelling itself tends to be minor. If your jaw looks the same within 2 weeks of treatment, it is not so much because of swelling as because the muscle has not yet started to shrink.
Why does swelling occur after jaw Botox?
Botox is dissolved in a small amount of saline before injection, so right after the injection, the spot where the product went in puffs up slightly. This puffiness subsides within a few hours as the product spreads into the muscle.
If the needle touches a small blood vessel, a bruise can form and the surrounding area may swell. If you are taking blood-thinning medications or supplements, or drink alcohol and go to a sauna on the day of treatment, bruising and swelling can get bigger.
Timing of jaw Botox swelling and muscle changes
- For a few hours right after treatment, the injection sites are raised before settling down.
- If a bruise forms, it turns yellow and fades over a few days to 1–2 weeks.
- For a few days after the treatment, your jaw may feel stiff or a little weaker when you chew.
- The muscle begins to shrink gradually from about two weeks after treatment, and changes in the jawline can be expected over one to two months, with the degree varying from person to person.
At FACE FILTER Clinic Suwon, jaw Botox takes about 10 minutes, you can return to your daily routine right after treatment, and we explain that bruising and swelling are mild and settle soon.
Care to reduce swelling after jaw Botox
On the day of treatment, do not rub or press hard on the injection sites, and for 3 to 7 days avoid heavy drinking, saunas and jjimjilbang (Korean spas), hot baths, and strenuous exercise. If you are worried about bruising, applying a cold compress lightly for a day or two after treatment may help.
If only one side swells severely, or if warmth and pain keep getting worse, it may be an infection, so please contact the clinic. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a muscle disorder, please let us know before treatment.

FAQ
Q. Can I go to work the day after jaw Botox?
A. The puffiness at the injection sites settles within a few hours, so it usually does not interfere with going to work the next day. Even if a bruise appears, it is usually small enough to cover with makeup and fades over several days to one or two weeks, so if you have an important event, it is best to leave a few days of margin.
Q. Why might my jaw look bigger after jaw Botox?
A. For a few days right after treatment, the injection sites may look prominent because of the product and swelling. The muscle only starts to shrink from about two weeks later, so it is normal to see no change before then, and if nothing has changed after a month, we check it during a consultation.
Q. Can I massage my jaw to reduce swelling after jaw Botox?
A. Rubbing the injection sites hard can spread the product to muscles where it is not wanted, so it is best to avoid it. Avoid intense massage or facial meridian massage for a month, and let the swelling settle naturally over time.
