Precautions After Filler Treatment: What Should I Avoid, and Until When?

Precautions after filler treatment are less confusing when divided into three periods: the day of treatment, 3 to 7 days, and 2 to 3 weeks. The basics are protecting the injection sites from infection and pressure on the day of treatment, cutting back on heat and alcohol, which worsen swelling and inflammation, for a week, and not pressing on the treated area for 2 to 3 weeks so the filler can settle into place.
What should be avoided during each period after filler treatment?
- On the day of treatment, wait 2 to 3 hours before washing your face and wearing makeup, and remove the DuoDERM dressing on the injection sites after 1 to 3 days.
- For 3 to 7 days after treatment, avoid heavy drinking, smoking, saunas and jjimjilbang (Korean bathhouses), hot baths, and strenuous exercise.
- For 2 to 3 weeks after treatment, avoid wearing tight-fitting hats, sleeping face down or on your side, wearing glasses, and facial meridian massage.
- During the same 2 to 3 weeks, postpone ultrasound or radiofrequency treatments and dental work that requires keeping your mouth open for a long time.
Alcohol and heat widen blood vessels and worsen bruising and swelling, and smoking reduces blood flow and slows recovery. After injection, filler blends with the surrounding tissue for a while as its shape stabilizes, and if outside force or heat energy is applied during this period, the shape may change or be pushed to one side.
Points That Need Special Care After Lip Filler
Lips move every time you talk or eat, and their mucous membrane is thin, so swelling appears more prominently than in other areas. On the day of treatment, avoid sucking hard on straws and eating hot and spicy food, and don't bite your lips or press on them with your fingers to check the shape. Before the swelling goes down, the left and right sides may look different in size, so judge the shape after 1 to 2 weeks have passed. If you are prone to frequent blisters around your lips, it's best to let us know before treatment.
At our Suwon clinic, depending on the treatment area, we prescribe medication to help prevent inflammation and relieve pain, and advise taking it without missing a dose for 3 days.

As an injection treatment, it may cause bruising, swelling, pain, and a foreign-body sensation, most of which subside within 1 to 2 weeks. If the pain gets progressively worse even after taking the medication, the skin turns white or bluish, or blisters, itching, or a feeling of heat persist, please contact the clinic right away. If you have a medical history such as an antibiotic allergy, please let us know before treatment.
FAQ
Q. Can I go to work right after filler treatment?
A. Most people can return to daily life right away. However, swelling and small bruises may remain at the injection sites, so wait 2 to 3 hours before wearing makeup, and if you have a presentation or photo shoot where your face will be visible, it's best to schedule the date with 1 to 2 weeks to spare.
Q. Will sleeping face down change the shape of my filler?
A. If one side of your face is pressed for a long time while you sleep, filler that hasn't yet settled may shift. For 2 to 3 weeks after treatment, sleep on your back as a rule, and if you tend to sleep on your side, change your position so your face isn't pressed against the pillow.
Q. When can I start exercising after filler treatment?
A. Light walking is possible from the next day, but avoid exercise that makes you sweat heavily and saunas for 3 to 7 days after treatment. Exercises in which your face touches the floor or where you could be hit by a ball should resume only after 2 to 3 weeks, when the filler has settled.
