Botox units: what do the numbers mean, and what are the doses by area?

A Botox unit is a unit that measures the potency of botulinum toxin, not the volume of the drug. Even with the same number of units, the cc varies depending on how much it is diluted with water, so how much you received is judged by units rather than cc. How many units are needed depends on the size and strength of the muscle, the area, and your previous treatment history.
What does a Botox unit measure?
Botulinum toxin is a drug that acts on muscles in very small amounts, so its unit is defined by biological activity rather than weight or volume. This unit is the unit (U). The powdered drug in the vial is dissolved in saline before use, and whether the same 100 units are dissolved in 2cc or 4cc, the potency contained is the same.
Each product has different criteria for defining units and different toxin content, so units of one product cannot be directly converted into units of another. That is why, when telling us the dose you received elsewhere, letting us know the product name along with the units helps us plan.
How are Botox units decided for each area?
The larger and thicker the muscle, the more units are needed. Thin expression muscles, such as on the forehead or around the eyes, receive small units divided across several points, while large muscles such as the masseter (chewing muscle), trapezius, and calves receive more units. Even in the same area, the amount is adjusted according to muscle thickness and left-right differences.
At our Suwon clinic, we offer square jaw Botox at 50 units, body Botox covering one area among the trapezius, calves, or thighs at 100 units, and hyperhidrosis Botox in 50-unit and 100-unit packages. Wrinkle Botox is decided by the number of areas rather than units.
Is it better to increase Botox units?
Increasing units does not make the results proportionally greater. Injecting more than needed can spread the drug to surrounding muscles, causing unwanted changes such as unnatural expressions or excessive loss of chewing strength. Repeatedly receiving many units at short intervals may also increase the likelihood of developing antibodies that reduce the drug's effect.
That is why we start with an amount suited to the muscle's condition and decide the next dose after checking the change 1 to 2 months later. Wrinkle Botox is based on retreatment at 3 to 4 month intervals. If your eyelids droop or you have difficulty swallowing, please contact the clinic, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have a muscle disorder, please let us know before treatment.

FAQ
Q. What is the difference between 50 units and 100 units of Botox?
A. The amount of potency delivered differs, and so do the areas they are used for. Large facial muscles such as the square jaw are based on 50 units, while larger body muscles such as the trapezius or calves are based on 100 units, adjusted to muscle thickness.
Q. If the Botox units are the same, is the cc the same too?
A. Even with the same units, the cc varies depending on the amount of saline used for dilution. Skin Botox, which is spread shallowly and widely, is used more diluted, while square jaw Botox, which is concentrated in one muscle, is used more concentrated, so it is more accurate to look at the dose in units.
Q. Does a higher number of Botox units make resistance more likely?
A. It is known that repeatedly receiving many units at once at short intervals may increase the likelihood of developing antibodies. That is why we inject only as much as needed, keep to the intervals, and it is best to tell us in consultation the product, dose, and timing of your previous treatments.
