Botox pain: how does it differ by area, and how can it be reduced?

Botox pain consists of a prick as the fine needle goes in and a dull pressure as the product goes in, each lasting a few seconds, and the treatment itself is short at about 10 minutes. However, the sensation varies with the number of injection points and the area: the prick may feel stronger around the eyes and forehead where the skin is thin, and the soreness may feel stronger at the jaw and trapezius where the muscles are thick.
Where does Botox pain come from?
Botox is a treatment in which botulinum toxin is injected in small, divided amounts into muscles or the superficial layers of the skin. Most of the pain comes from the prick as the needle passes through the skin and the brief pressure as the product enters the muscle. Because the needle is fine and the amount injected at each point is small, each sensation ends quickly.
The more injection points there are, the more it feels as though the pricking continues. This is why skin Botox, injected superficially across the whole face, feels longer than wrinkle Botox.
How does Botox pain differ by area?
The forehead, glabella, and around the eyes have thin skin and many nerves, so the prick is felt distinctly. For a square jaw, the product goes into the thick masseter, causing a dull, pressing sensation, and body areas such as the trapezius or calves have many injection points, so soreness may last longer. Areas with delicate movement, such as the bridge of the nose and around the mouth, are done slowly to inject small amounts precisely.
At our Suwon clinic, wrinkle Botox proceeds in the order of personalized consultation, numbing cream, design, disinfection, and treatment, and the treatment takes about 10 minutes. If you are sensitive to pain, please let us know during consultation and we will decide the numbing time and pace together.
Managing Botox pain and post-treatment reactions
The embossing, small bumps that rise at the injection sites right after treatment, usually subsides within 2 to 3 hours and may last 1 to 2 days depending on skin condition. Bruising and swelling may appear mildly and then ease soon. After square jaw Botox, you may feel soreness when chewing for a few days.
Do not rub the treated area hard, and do not get strong massages or meridian massage for one month. If your eyelids droop, or you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, please contact the clinic immediately. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have a muscle disorder, be sure to let us know before treatment.

FAQ
Q. Do I have to get anesthesia because of Botox pain?
A. Because wrinkle Botox uses a fine needle and takes little time, it is usually done after applying numbing cream. If you are sensitive to pain, or if the treatment involves many injection points, such as skin Botox, please let us know during consultation and we will allow enough time for numbing.
Q. Is the pain different between square jaw Botox and forehead Botox?
A. They feel different. The forehead has thin skin, so the prick is distinct, while with a square jaw the product goes into a thick muscle, so the dull, pressing sensation is stronger. Which one feels more painful varies from person to person depending on skin thickness and sensitivity.
Q. Is it normal to feel sore for a few days after Botox?
A. After injections into large muscles such as the square jaw or trapezius, soreness may remain for a few days, and the usual course is for it to lessen day by day. If the pain increases or the area becomes swollen and hot, an examination is needed, so please contact us.
