Inner dryness in fall and winter: why does skin feel tight even after moisturizing?

In fall and winter, low humidity and indoor heating weaken the skin barrier's ability to retain moisture, so inner tightness can easily remain even after moisturizing.
Inner dryness is a common term for skin that feels tight underneath even though the surface looks shiny or normal. It often occurs when both the outer protective layer and the inner moisture reservoir weaken, so rather than simply switching creams, addressing cleansing, the indoor environment, and inner skin care together helps reduce the tightness.
Five reasons skin feels tight even after moisturizing
- Dry air and heating: When temperatures drop and the air becomes dry, overall skin barrier function declines and the skin becomes more sensitive to irritation. Indoor heating makes the air even drier.
- Lack of barrier lipids: When lipids such as ceramides that fill the spaces in the stratum corneum and natural moisturizing factors that hold water are lacking, applied moisture escapes easily.
- Weakened moisture reservoir in the dermis: When collagen and hyaluronic acid in the dermis decrease with age and UV exposure, the skin's ability to hold water from within weakens.
- Harsh cleansing: Washing until your skin squeaks or washing with hot water for a long time strips away even the lipids in the protective barrier.
- Flaky dead skin: When dead skin builds up and lifts, moisturizer cannot penetrate and sits on the surface, and makeup also tends to look cakey.
That is why inner dryness is resolved by both adding moisture and preventing it from escaping.
Three changes to make at home
Application order
- Apply moisturizer right after cleansing while your skin is still slightly damp.
- Choose a cream texture over a light lotion, and check whether it contains barrier-forming ingredients such as ceramides.
- Use gentle, fragrance-free products, and reapply several times whenever your skin feels tight.
Cleansing habits
- Keep showers and face washing brief, using lukewarm water.
- If your cleanser leaves a squeaky-clean feeling, switch to a gentler one.
- Do not scrub or peel away flakes just because your skin feels dry.
Indoor environment
- While the heating is on, use a humidifier to maintain humidity, and keep it in the bedroom while you sleep.
- Clean the humidifier often so that mold does not grow.
- Choose a spot where air from the heater does not blow directly on your face.
Care options to consider when tightness keeps returning
If tightness keeps recurring despite consistent home care, we also consider treatments that address the skin's inner environment. The three injections and the one topical care differ, starting with how they are delivered.
| Category | What goes in | Anesthesia | Time required | Return to daily life |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rejuran HB+ | PN and hyaluronic acid 1:1, lidocaine | Numbing Cream | About 15-30 minutes | Daily activities possible right away |
| Rejuran Healer | PN (polynucleotide) | Numbing Cream | About 15-30 minutes | Daily activities possible right away |
| Re2O | Extracellular matrix (ECM) derived from human dermis | Topical anesthesia | About 1 hour including anesthesia | Slight swelling and tightness usually subside within 2~7 days |
| Hydration care | Hydrating ampoule and mask, soothing step | None | About 30 minutes to 1 hour | Daily activities possible right away |
